1968 Hilton Head Island – 1968

A quick slice of the late‑60s— 1968 Hilton Head Island in their own words. We want to tell you about a trip We took a year ago that took us into an area that my wife had been researching for some time Magazines began to be left open at my side of the table and up on my headboard And there was a kind of a concerted Education campaign for a place called Hilton Head Island And you know there still aren’t too many people who know where it is when the topic comes up people say Where’s that Hilton Head Island is in South Carolina, but just off the coast of Georgia and It’s a fabulous spot. It seems to me for a family vacation be great for couples but we took all of our children and we did it during spring vacation which I think is the duriest time of the whole year here because it isn’t really spring yet and Everybody’s sort of sick and tired of winter So it’s a good time to get away and the weather at that time of year at Hilton Head just spectacular We flew from Chicago down to Atlanta You can then pick up another flight and fly from Atlanta to Savannah Georgia But since we had not driven across that part of the southeast from Atlanta to coastline We rented a Hertz car piled our suitcases right in at the airport and then with our roadmap took off We got down to Atlanta about nine o’clock in the morning We run away by about 9 30 and it took the better part of the day. Yes, the roads are not great I mean there are no super highways that leads you directly to Hilton Head So if you don’t want to drive across Georgia, you’d better just fly all the way to Savannah And then it’s I think 20 or 25 miles from there and though it is an island There’s a bridge out to it.

Vermont in the fall – September 5, 1968

They talk it through in their usual breezy way— Vermont in the fall in their own words. It’s been a long time since we’ve been to Vermont. Well, I’d always like to go but I think this is especially a good time of year because the colors are better in Vermont than they are probably anywhere else in the country except maybe this or maybe Aspen, Colorado. Well all right let’s take a little trip to Vermont then and let’s think of a good spot to stay and maybe do a little vicarious upping and dowing through the good old Vermont hills.

1968 In a pumpkin field at Wauconda Apple Orchard with Chris and Jeff (audio drops briefly in spots) 3 min – 1968

Here’s one from the stack—easygoing and chatty: 1968 In a pumpkin field at Wauconda Apple Orchard with Chris and Jeff (audio drops briefly in spots) 3 min in their own words. So if you’ve got a city type child as most of us have and you’ve never really planted a cornfield or a pumpkin field maybe one of these Sundays very soon now before Halloween you ought to get out into the country this is one of the places where and if you don’t pick your own apples this is a great project because you come in and you either your baskets or they sell you the baskets and then you take off and they show you where to park and they have the ladders and you go up into the trees and you pull all the apples you want and then you take them home and you feel so rich because all of a sudden you’ve got apples and squash and cider in the freezer and and taffy apples this is a ball it’s a good way to spend a Sunday think about it

Here’s one from the stack—easygoing and chatty: 1968 Mama Lena Restaurant in their own words. The fanfare, now we’ll hear what we’re having for dinner. For dessert, we’re going to have homemade cannoli, which we will make right on the stage and tell you a little bit about the restaurant, what has happened to us, what is hopefully in the future for us. It’s called Mamalinas and it’s at 24 East Chicago Avenue and it seats just 30 people.

1968 Weekend in Wisconsin and Wulffs Island Inn – 1968

This one drops you right into their day— 1968 Weekend in Wisconsin and Wulffs Island Inn in their own words. You know, where you can leave Chicago or this part of the country on a Friday afternoon and get where you’re going by supper time and bed down in a nice place and be assured that you’ll find one or two interesting spots for meals and maybe a little sightseeing along the way. And we came upon Wolf’s Island Inn. Well, when I was young, a teenager, we used to think it was great and exciting to go out to Wolf’s Island for dinner.

Quebec City (Part 1) – December 29, 1968

Short, warm, and very much 19xx— Quebec City (Part 1) in their own words. But the other day we got to talking about a trip we took two years ago to Quebec City, Carnival. And we couldn’t find a place to stay in one of the big hotels and then right now I’m very glad of it because we were able to stay in a private home. Yes and you really don’t park on the streets in Quebec City.

But they soon settled down after takeoff, and they became rather playful because we had a row of seats for human beings and people who were accompanying the elephants. Well, we did manage to train one of them for the beginning of her circus career. In the bright sunshine, they appear to glitter and sparkle as if they were covered with neon lighting all over.

Prince of Wales in Waterton Lake and Glacier Park Lodge – June 24, 1968

Captured on the go— Prince of Wales in Waterton Lake and Glacier Park Lodge in their own words. When after about 7 miles riding on this lovely launch going down Waterton Lake, crossing the United States-Canadian border, you get directly under a huge mountain called Goat Hunt Mountain U.D. This lake, Waterton Lake, rose 8 feet in what, was it 24 hours? See these beautiful brown and turquoise buildings, very well kept and this I should say for all of the National Park buildings, they’re beautifully maintained.
